Simone Cesaro
Simone Cesaro graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 1988 at University of Padua (Italy) and completed the 4-year specialization in Pediatrics in 1992 at the same University, becaming Pediatrician. From the beginning of the career , he has been actively involved in many aspects of pediatric hematology and oncology, especially in chemotherapy for leukemia and lymphoma, supportive care, and early and late effects of treatment. He becames clinical assistant at the Department of Pediatrics in Padua in 1994, and from that time he started working on pediatric hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). In 1996, he had a six-month training period as visiting doctor at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Sick Children. Following this, he became Clinical Coordinator of the hematopoietic stem cell transplant program of the Pediatric Hematology Oncology Division in Padua. He held this position until November 2009 when he was appointed Director of the Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Unit at the Department of Pediatrics in Verona. He is a member of the scientific committees of several working groups including Pediatrics (for MASCC), Supportive Care (for SIOP), Aplastic Anemia, Infection (for EBMT), Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant, Infection, Supportive Care (for AIEOP). In 2005 and 2015. he was appointed Chairman of the Supportive Care Group and Infection of AIEOP (Italian Association of Pediatric Hematology Oncology), respectively. In 2010, he was appointed Chairman of Infectious Diseases Working Party of European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) and he organized the 8th,11th, and 18th IDWP-EBMT Training Courses, and in 2018 the 11th Annual Congress of Pediatric Diseases Working Party (PDWP) of EBMT. His clinical research includes more than 300 publications in peer-reviewed journals focusing on bacterial and fungal infections, viral complications after HSCT, CVC care and management, post-transfusion hepatitis, growth-factor use, HSCT for pediatric leukemias, hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, Shwachmann-Diamond disease and aplastic anemia, chemotherapy for acute leukemia or solid organ tumors. From 1998, he has been the Italian medical advisor of the charities Paul O’Gorman Lifeline (UK) and Lifeline Italia, liaising with and advising pediatric hematology and oncology centers in Ukraine, Georgia and Kyrgyzstan.
